Decoding the Sidewall
Take a size like 285/75R16. The first number, 285, is the tire’s width in millimeters. The second number, 75, is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of that width, so the sidewall here is 75% of 285mm. The letter R indicates radial construction, and the final number, 16, is the wheel diameter in inches that the tire is built to fit.
The Diameter Formula
A tire size calculator applies a simple formula to get overall diameter in inches: multiply the width by the aspect ratio, divide by 2540, multiply by 2, then add the wheel diameter. For the 285/75R16 example, that works out to roughly 32.8 inches tall. Once you have the diameter, circumference and revolutions per mile follow directly, which is what determines how accurate your speedometer will be.
Why Metric Tires Are Trickier Than Inch Tires
Inch-measurement tires state their dimensions directly, but metric tires require this extra conversion step, which is exactly why calculators are so widely used — there’s simply more room for error doing the math by hand, and more possible size combinations to sort through when shopping.
Beyond Diameter: Load Index and Speed Rating
The sidewall code carries more than size. A load index number indicates the maximum weight the tire can carry at a specified pressure, and a following letter or number indicates the speed rating — the maximum speed the tire is rated to sustain at that load. Both matter as much as diameter when you’re choosing a replacement, especially for trucks or towing setups.
When to Reach for a Calculator
Use a tire size calculator any time you’re comparing a potential replacement tire to your factory setup, checking whether a size swap will throw off your speedometer, or trying to find alternate sizes near a target diameter that aren’t manufactured in your exact spec. As a rule of thumb, most fitment guides recommend staying within about 3% of your factory diameter to avoid speedometer and ABS calibration issues.
